 Today we are going to discuss about an anti-bacterial medicine Chloramphenicol. Chloramphenicol is a broad spectrum antibiotic which inhibit the growth of bacteria by stoping protein  production. It is available in 250 mg capsule and 500 mg capsule.

This medicine is easily available in the market by its generic name Chloramphenicol. Some company have given it’s brand names which is different according to the company. Branded medicine may be costly than generic medicine but the chemical composition is same. The names of some branded names of medicine are :

3. Uses of Chloramphenicol capsule/Paraxin capsule

Now we will discuss about the uses of chloramphenicol capsule in which diseases this medicine is used. As we know that Chloramphenicol is broad spectrum antibiotic medicine. So  it is mainly used for the treatment of Typhoid Fever which is one type of fever  occur due to contaminated water ,food. and the symptoms like mild or sever fever, loss of        appetite,nausea,vomiting,headache,stomach pain patients faces ,red patches or blister appear on the chest ,leg ,stomach. Typhoid long last for 3 to 30 days.

Other disease known as meningitis in which swealling occurs in the spinal cord and brain. in which symptoms like headache, fever,pain in the neck are seen. This medicine is also used in Cholera disease. This is a disease related to intestine. and symptoms like diarroea,vomiting,muscles cramps. due to excessive diarroea dehydration occur in the body due to which electrolyte imbalance so they feel weakness.

Doctor advice to drink much water while taking this medicine in cholera and Oral Dehydration Salt given to drink. Commonly it is not used is fungal infection but in serious cases it is suggested. Fungal infection is another disease in which serious wound appear . so to treat  it chloramphenicol is taken.

Bacterial infection  like bone infection , ear infection,teeth infection, can be treated by this medicine. Plague is another disease which  is caused by rat. In that disease chloramphenicol was used before but nowadays it is not taken.

4. Side Effect of Chloramphenicol Capsule

What are the side effect of chloramphenicol? The side effect of this medicine is very dangerous . Some side effect are given below:

-Bone marrow supression

-Nausea and Vomiting, Diarrhoea

-Bleeding related disorder.increase in bleeding time

-Swealing on the face ,lips,tongue

-Blood disorder like leukemia,anaemia

In Children disease named Grey Baby Syndrome in which stomach size increase,diarrhoea,loss of appetite,skin appear grey,heart related problem,low blood pressure

Due to dangerous side effect chloramphenicol is prescribed for short term duration . If you faces other unusual side effect then stop taking medicine and consult your doctor so that further treatment can be given

5. Chloramphenicol  Dose

Do not take this medicine without advice of doctor.Doses may vary according to age,weight. The common dose is 250mg or 500mg  for twice or thrice in day. You can also take 4 times according to condition of disease.

Patients can take before or after meal and For adult 50mg per kg for 7 days and children 12.5 mg or 25 mg per kg per day {300mg for 60kg]


6. Warning and Precaution 

-Mainly it is not given in pregnancy. According to condition it can be given in last month

-Not for brest feeding mother

-If liver or kidney disease

-If bleeding related disorder
